The Thrill of The Chase

Greg Johnson is a man of many talents and passions, one of which has grown steadily in the past 11 years is his fascination with weather. An avid amateur storm chaser, Greg will pack up on a minutes notice and head south of the border into tornado alley for a weekend of hair-raising chases and stunning photography. Greg was recently featured on the front page of the Leader-Post’s Weekender section. Read the article, The Thrill of the Chase.

Under The Stars

On wednesday evening Greg took me and Keith 40 K outside the city for a little camera class. There is this old barn in a field just off the highway that Greg has been wanting to shoot in some way for awhile. So we grabbed our cameras and our tripods and a light and headed over there at 10 PM. With the sun having just gone down and the lights from Regina in the background it made for some really cool photos. If you look close you can see a shooting star in one of the photos. My favorite photography

lesson by far! Hopefully on the next one Ill be wearing pants outside. Sometimes I forget I live in Canada.

Touchdown!

Monday night I was storm chasing in Southwest Saskatchewan.  I viewed a funnel cloud snaking to the ground west of Mossbank.  By the time I had my camera out the funnel had lifted off the ground.  I took about 150 images and the funnel descended to the ground and back up into the clouds several times during that time span.  Below: the best shot of the funnel, as well as several lightning shots from the same system.

Stars and the milky way

These are a few more of the star photos taken in February while we shot Erin and Michael Cawkwell’s wedding.  The image with the photographer in the red snow suit is photographed by Kiri and I am the model.

Northern Sky – Star trails

These images were captured at the end of February 2009 taken from Lintlaw Saskatchewan.  Very late at night.  Very Very cold.  The temperature dipped to nearly -30 but fortunately there was absolutely no wind.  The star trail photo was about a ten minute exposure and the others were about 15 second exposures.  These were photographed with the Canon 5D Mark II.    The close up image is a cropped section of the last photo.  This shows a section of the sky which to the naked eye appears to be a single bright star.  When we zoom in you can see that it is actually a cluster of stars.

2008 Storm Chase photos

These are a few of the thousands of photos from the 2008 storm chase season.  2008 was a great year for lightning and some very interesting storms.  I was not fortunate to see any tornados this year but did come away from every chase with a wide variety of interesting images.   These are images from four different chases is south eastern saskatchewan in July 2008.
